I agree it would help to know basic Sanskrit. If I was a Roman Catholic it might help to know Latin. However, in the meantime, I would like to know the meaning of these titles. Unfortunately, English is the only language in which I am conversational. Also, I’m in the United States and the majority of Hindu temples exist for the immigrant community.
Not an answer to your question, it might be simpler to start with a short song like this compositionyou can hear it on youtube. Also, for fierce ugra devatas shatanamqvali Kali or Narasimha, if you are doing any serious practice, it is good to have guidance. Guidance is a little hard to find for Her in my part of shatanamavai planet.

But thank you for the link. I dont have experience in sadhana with ugra devatas. But one important advice that is given is that if one is doing sadhana without any expectation of asthottara material goal in mind, but just out of love and for inner progress, then mistakes dont matter so much.
This is especially relevant for ugra devatas. That said, the practice even if difficult, can lead to quicker progress relative to gentler deities see page 9 of this document.
Thank you for the link. The essence of the document is that it is better to make an attempt at a rite than to do nothing at all. Some tantric rites appear to be so complicated that you wonder how anyone has the time to do them.
But one point to note is that the document is mainly written for people pursuing inner ashttotara or practicing out of a sense of love. If one is aiming for some material goal, then the rules can be stricter. For instance, the author recommends dedicating the benefits at the practice at the end by saying ‘sarvam sri krishnarpanamastu’ sarvam – everything, arpana – dedicate.
Another way is to dedicate this by saying ‘sri sadgurunarpanamastu’ at the end. Here one is dedicating to the Guru tattwa which leads people out of their traps. Syatanamavali can say it in English and dedicate to some benevolent force. Note that this is good for the practitioner too. For instance, dedicating it to the guru tattwa helps you on the path. I’ve visited the Kali temple near Washington DC, but I was the only non-Indian there and didn’t have a clue as to what was going on.

I am not a native Sanskrit speaker either, but I grew up with some Bengali spoken in my household, and as such, most of the names in the list are ones that I know or can puzzle out.
Mother Kali has deep ties to speech and language, though they are usually overshadowed by Her more obvious aspects. Thanks to everyone for the help. I did locate a blog http: It also has a short video of someone reciting them. She expounds on the meaning of each of MaaKali’s titles.
The titles she and the other blog uses are from the Mahanirvana Tantra.
It appears there are many doctrinal translations. A bit like the hardcore protestant Christians who translated the name of John the Baptist shatanamagali “John the Immerser” because they wanted to make sure their concept was orthodox. I want to keep with the original Sanskrit as much as possible, but what’s the point if you don’t know what it means?
