On the contrary, I have always despised Cela, and unfortunately I cannot think I can do a good job of separating Cela the man, and Cela the author. I can see that these mistakes might have been completely deliberate by the author who was, after all, a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language when attempting to evoke the idea of a semi-illiterate rural labourer writing his memoirs, but I have not enjoyed reading this and I think that the effect is not fully realised. The aesthetic sensibility of the time was marked by a different, freer attitude towards art and life.

It’s a chilling scene. I also contemplated the possibility that he was actually schizophrenic, and therefore of diminished camjlo responsibility, but there is actually little evidence that this is the case, so to me he is simply evil. Pascual is an animal, and he feels no remorse for his criminal deeds.
